Investigations

In case of an Emergency dial 911

The duties of the Criminal Investigations Division (CID) consist of initiating and conducting follow-up investigations involving crimes occurring predominantly in the unincorporated areas of Charleston County; however, detectives occasionally investigate cases that occur in municipalities or towns within the County that have police departments that are not staffed, trained or equipped to investigate certain crimes. CID is staffed with detectives specializing in major violent crimes, commercial property crimes, cold cases, gang investigations, special victim crimes, and financial fraud or internet crimes. The majority of CID cases are prosecuted in the General Sessions Court by the 9th Circuit Solicitor’s Office.

A detective is assigned to the US Marshals Task Force, whose primary function is to apprehend wanted fugitives. A detective is also assigned to coordinate the agency's response to Criminal Domestic Violence issues. Additionally, detectives are assigned to the Department of Homeland Security Gang Investigations Task Force and the Border Enforcement Security Task Force.

CID is also responsible for the management and maintenance of the Sex Offender Registry (SOR) for Charleston County.  The SOR unit conducts and oversees field checks of sex offenders, ensuring their compliance with state law.  The SOR unit registers one of the highest numbers of sex offenders in the state, often exceeding 700 convicted felons at any given time.  The majority of those offenders are required to register several times a year.
