The Training and Staff Development Unit ensures that every Detention Officer completes the mandated training requirements as set forth by State and Federal Law and the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy. This training includes the use of firearms, bloodborne pathogens, Interpersonal Communications, defensive tactics, and CPR/Standard First Aid. The Sheriff’s Office strives to provide the best possible training for Detention Officers.

Juvenile Department
The Juvenile Department of the Charleston County Detention Center is composed of the following positions:
One Captain, One Lieutenant, Four Sergeants and Twenty Detention Officers.

Each Sergeant has the responsibility of supervising one team of officers. There are four teams. Each team consists of five Detention Officers. The teams work twelve-hour shifts, fourteen days per month. In a month, each team works seven days and seven nights.

The officers primary responsibility is ensuring the safety and security of the juveniles detained in the facility. The Officers provide the juveniles with all of the required necessities for daily living activities.

The officers are responsible for the Intake/Releasing of Juveniles and the supervision of the Juveniles in a direct supervision atmosphere.

The Juvenile Detention Center has two full time teachers and one teacher's aide provided by the Charleston County School District. It is mandatory for Juveniles in the Detention Center to attend classes on a daily basis.

Each Officer is trained in Interpersonal Communication Skills, American Red Cross First Aide and CPR, Defensive Tactics and Departmental Policies and Procedures.

In addition to each officer's initial training, each officer assigned to the Juvenile Detention Center will successfully complete the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy's Juvenile Specific Course.

The Total capacity of the Juvenile Detention Center and Juvenile General Sessions unit is 55. Charleston County will complete construction on a new Juvenile Facility in 2004.

Work Camp/Release

Work Camp/Release Supervisor, Sgt. A. Grant
The Work Camp/Release which houses ninety-six inmates that are convicted by Family Court and are working for the county. Inmates assigned to Work Release work at their jobs and return to the facility in the evening. In addition, on Saturday and Sunday, weekenders are held in this facility.
