The Charleston County Sheriff’s Office Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team consists of thirty full-time deputies who serve the team on a collateral duty basis. The SWAT team provides a coordinated response to critical incidents throughout Charleston County, and whenever requested, in other areas throughout the State of South Carolina. These incidents are diverse and include hostage/barricaded gunman situations, high risk search and arrest warrant service, terrorist incidents, security operations, and response to civil disturbances. The team is equipped and trained to operate on water, and in urban and rural environments in both daylight and darkness. The team employs a fully equipped command post vehicle, an armored military rescue vehicle named "RHINO" as well as a hardened HMWVV. The Sheriff’s Office was the first in the state to incorporate their Explosive Response Team (ERT) with the team during SWAT situations. This coordination has allowed for an enhanced tactical response to incidents involving weapons of mass destruction. The ERT Unit employs the use of a two remote controlled robots which are utilized for incident survey, gas deployment, and as part of a less lethal weapons delivery system. Team members receive 192 training hours annually with specialized firearms and equipment, less lethal options, annual Physical Fitness Testing, building entry (to include explosive breaching), building clearing, active shooter training, counter sniper operations, and chemical dispersion. The Sheriff’s Office Aviation Unit augments the SWAT team with airborne support at incidents. The aviation unit has capabilities to provide aerial observation and remote video. Charleston County Emergency Medical Services has selected fourteen Tactical Emergency Medics (TEMS) which train and work directly with the SWAT team during critical incidents. TEMS train with the team and provide emergency medical support during operations. A volunteer trauma unit doctor is assigned to the team and responds to all incidents in support of the TEMS and SWAT response. The SWAT... Team! |
